Ermine Street c1907
This wonderful image is taken from an original postcard and shows Ermine Street alongside the Hardwicke Arms, looking north. Smoothy's shop is on the left behind the telegraph pole and the sweep of Arrington Hill can be glimpsed behind the furthest cart. It's a quiet morning scene taken during high summer.
The postcard is postmarked Arrington on the 21 February 1908 although the image may be dated earlier. The postcard was sent from M Reed to "my dear brother" Henry J Reed, who later became Arrington's shoemaker. The original image is badly faded and some digital restoration work has been carried out. The white markings on the right are caused by impressions from the reverse causing surface wear.
The photographer is believed to be Robert H Clark of Royston.
