| Wimpole Hall Celebration |
 |
| Every resident of Arrington was invited to a celebration
on Wednesday 30 August to mark the 30th birthday of the National
Trust's stewardship of the Wimpole Hall Estate. Held directly in
front of Wimpole Hall, the event featured live music, a beer tent
and barbecue. As darkness fell, hundreds of people braved the arriving
drizzle to watch an impressive fireworks display. Our thanks go
to the management and staff of the National Trust. Happy Birthday! |

| Local History - Wimpole Park
1944 |
This
photograph shows the nose art on a B-17G Flying Fortress of the
USAAF 91st Bomber Group flying out of Bassingbourn. B-17G "Lady
Helen of Wimpole" was named after Lt Helen Pierson, Army
Nurse Corps, who was assigned to the 163rd General Hospital at Wimpole
Park (situated just inside the Arrington Gates) and who later married
401BS Commanding Officer John Davis. The naming ceremony pictured
is thought to have taken place at Bassinbourn in April/May of 1944.
Lt Pierson appears to be 'launching' a wrapped bottle (?) suspended
by a cord from the propellor boss. |

stock is now in the collection of Steve Odell. |

| Arrington Garden Party |
What a lovely day we had for the Arrington Garden
Party, the weather was good, the atmosphere was wonderful, and
it was also great to see so many people enjoying the day's event.
We raised over £1057.00 and the Parochial Parish Council wishes
to thank everyone who helped on the day. This year we had many new
helpers, so special thanks to you. During the afternoon a cheque
was presented to Rev Neil Brice, for £3200 towards the Church
Tower repair fund.

| Sampler from Arrington Offered
on eBay |
"This
great little sampler is only 6 x 5 1/2 inch including frame, worked
in typical red thread with the alphabet in capitals and lower case.
Simple border pattern separating the two. We then have a line of
numbers 1 to 14. At the bottom we have the girls details Sarah
Payne, Aged 9 years Arrington School. She dated her sampler
twice in the middle. With all this detail we can find so much more
about Sarah, born 1874 lived at 8 Elm Farm Wimpole, Cambridge. Her
farther William was a farm foreman or bailiff, looking after over
250 acres with 5 men and two boys. Sarah lived with her parents
William and Mary and her brother James and sister Ellen."
[In the 1891 Census for Arrington
(on this web site) 16-year-old Sarah is listed as a General Domestic
Servant with the Copping family. The head of the household, Alfred
J Copping was Arrington's baker.]
